Working Draft of 2025 Advanced Foraging Workshops

This went out first to my newsletter subscribers and is now posted here as well. I’ve been brainstorming during holiday much-needed down time, about the request several craft fair visitors made regarding advanced foraging workshops centred around preparing wild-harvested herbs.  For all but two of the draft list I’ll share below, the day begins by going out to get the herb, then returning to prepare it and either enjoying the results as the workshop ends, or taking it home to enjoy, or both.  For the two which don’t have an actual foraging component to them, this is due to the fact that the variety of herb used, and the fact they are used dry, not fresh, means they will be provided at the workshop instead of out on the trail.  These are the hygiene and trail kit workshops.

For the rest of the draft list, the time required to do the harvesting, then learn how to and actually prepare the herb in a given manner is estimated to take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours and will require access to a kitchen.  While you can find many DIY’s online from various foragers and herbalists, most of them engage in preparation methods that take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks to complete.  We’ve learned methods that provide the same results in a shorter and more useful time frame, allowing me to draft these particular workshops.

Secondly, unlike the foraging workshop and trail tour where I ask YOU to pick the date by sending in your registration fee, these advanced workshops will require that I set dates due to having to arrange for a kitchen.

Last minute registration FOR SURE won’t fly for these, ADVANCED/PRIOR registration will be required!

So here is the draft list and the potential months they would best occur in due to availability of the herb being foraged for:

February: Pine vinegar household cleaner

March: Make Your Own Wild Herb Med Kit – 3-day

May: Making Herbal glycerine extracts advanced foraging workshop

June: Thistle advanced foraging workshop

July: Purslane advanced foraging workshop

August: Chokecherry advanced foraging workshop

September: Wild Herb Hygiene workshop

October: Curly Dock and Fir Needle advanced workshop

November: Mid-week kids’ focused advanced foraging workshop: Wild rosehip garlands for the Christmas season!

Remember that we attend various craft and wellness fairs which often take place on weekends, which is why I offer a mid-week option to those who prefer a weekday.  That option is typically Wednesdays.  If you are representing a homeschooling group, contact me via this email address to discuss which day would work best for your group for any of the above advanced workshop concepts.

Due to the need to arrange for a kitchen, don’t try to make arrangements last-minute!

I’d love to find out from Okanagan readers, which of the above workshops you’d like to attend and what your schedule looks like for the month it is slated for.

Estimated cost for attending an advanced foraging workshop will be $60 to help cover the cost of the kitchen rental, extra ingredients needed to put a given preparation together, handouts, containers to take the preparation home in, etc.  Depending on the various costs involved, it could go up to $75 or $80, but that remains to be seen.  Homeschooling groups should contact me for group rates.

If there is interest outside the Okanagan to have me record, edit and make these advanced workshops available online, I’d be interested in feedback on that possibility as well.  Due to many foraging locations not having access to wifi, I can’t offer to record them live in their entirety and have you attend from the comfort of your own kitchen.  The two workshops that don’t have the foraging component MAY work for live sessions if wifi is available at the kitchen being rented.
