Flea Market Amazement, and Spring Outlook

Flea Market Amazement, and Spring Outlook

So today was our third Sunday at the Rutland flea market, and a prayer partner is showing up each morning to say hi. The first day, he bought a tea and said to share it with others, and left us a tip. Last Sunday, he gave us a gift to help with bills. Today, we shared a turn-about that we can only attribute to answered prayer. Ashley’s EI was reversed and they actually ARE paying her now, and she got a fair bit of back pay as a result. This allowed a hoped-for plan she’d set out for herself last year, of starting her herbalist certificate this spring. She was able to pay for the training and began studying her first of three textbooks, this past Saturday! She thought that after having been fired from her previous job, that her plans for her herbalist certificate would be set back, but it appears God wagged His finger and said, nope, we’re staying on schedule! So now she’s studying for her own certification! That will be both of us with herbalism under our belt by the time her studies are done later this year.

Sales today began incredibly slowly, but by 11am to noon, sales picked up to where we ended the day having sold over $120 worth of teas, a glycerine tincture, and 4 packages of curly dock chocolate chip cookies! I made 10 4 packs, $7 for a package of 4 cookies, and had set out a tub of cookie pieces as samples. A guy with a CBC pin on his jacket tried a piece and pronounced it “interesting” before moving on. I don’t know what his affiliation is with the government mouthpiece, but he was there.

I am down to my last little bottle of Flower Essence of Arrowleaf Balsamroot. The one 4oz jar I’d set out, sold before Christmas, and 3 of the four smaller dropper bottles are now sold. I have one left, not counting the sample bottle. We have some 4oz jars left over from when I’d ordered a bunch for Ashley’s prickly lettuce ACV tincture, but we’d only bought a single package of the dropper bottles, not knowing what size people would want. Apparently they want both sizes. So now I need to get those bottles, along with more food-grade or USC glycerine. I may have to invest in an online order of that stuff, as no one in town sells it larger than 1 litre.

Ashley’s aromatic oils are slowly getting opinion cards filled out for her market research. 3 cards have been handed in to us now with two of those cards filled out at today’s flea market.

The big surprise was an East Indian farmer, whose fields we drive past every day to and from Bella’s chores, stopped by our table. When he finally started chatting with us, he asked where we forage, and upon realizing we do everything ourselves in the Okanagan and don’t import anything, he gave us his contact info, and said to get in touch as he wants to buy a box of our teas!

Now we need to follow up on that, find out what he means by “a box” because we haven’t sold our teas “wholesale” as of yet, and then discuss the foraging season versus when he plans to open his farm stand at his farm. I’m not sure how that conversation will go down when we have it, but it was the big surprise of the day to say the least!

As it is, the foraging season this year will be just as nuts as last year, now that we know how busy things could/will get.

Keep an eye on our calendars as spring fairs show up. If you are wanting a foraging workshop and trail tour, remember to commit to a date by sending me your registration fee. If you are wanting to attend an advanced foraging workshop coming up, please get your registration fee in before that date’s deadline so I can run to the store for the supplies for the appropriate number of people. The 3-day workshop coming up in March has a deadline of March 8th. This is the biggest workshop of the year due to what will be covered and created, so I need to know with enough time to gather all the materials and have them ready for you.

If you are interested in my Biblical natural health coaching, send in your client intake form. I’ll send you a coupon to use when booking your first date, as your first session with me is free.

We will continue to be at the Rutland Flea Market every Sunday until at least March 8th, then we will be there whenever we aren’t at craft or wellness fairs the rest of the year. It will be “home base” so to speak. So if you are in Kelowna, whether you live here or just passing through and you want to say hi in person, the market will be the best place to find us from 9am to 2pm.

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year!
